In Malta there are two new favourite ways to pay for things: the first is through Revolut and the second is using Apple Pay. So we are very pleased to be able to offer both of these payment options to our customers, and especially to our micro and small business owners who we are so passionate about championing.

What’s the Big Deal with the Big Apple (Pay)?

Thanks to wonderfully retro but oh so future-now QR code technology, integrating Apple Pay means that all merchants need to get paid for their product or service as a customer with a smartphone. As a merchant or service provider you don’t even need a phone yourself. And you certainly don’t need a POS device of any description.

This is huge.

Let’s remember that when it comes to leveraging payments, Malta has come a long way in a very short space of time. Apple Pay only launched here in 2019, and under Covid-19 conditions the country embraced the technology immediately because it made contactless (touchless) purchases possible. Now in the last quarter of 2021, Apple Pay has become the preferred way to pay.

The biggest drawback this preference provides for small and micro businesses - especially those used to trading in cash - is that contactless (and card payments of any kind) means investing in a POS device in order to take those payments. And POS devices are costly - costly to buy initially and costly in fees.

So, being able to offer our wamo contactless customers the ability to take payments using Apple Pay without a POS device and without fees is a game changer.

Great, so, how does it work?

It really couldn’t be simpler. Once you’ve downloaded wamo contactless, we’ll send your unique QR code stickers which you can place, well, anywhere. Your customer scans the QR code, taps on Apple Pay, et voila, payment made.

I don’t like stickers, what do I do?

Our number one goal is to make it possible for everyone to pay and get paid in whatever way best suits, effortlessly. If your customers prefer to use contactless – they are able to do so by choosing to pay through Revolut within the wamo app, or phone-to phone. If a bank transfer is your preference - whether to take a payment from a customer or to pay another merchant, service provider (friend, family member, hey, whoever!) that’s possible too - just get their bank details or search your contacts from the app.

Remember, wamo contactless is a banking app too, you can do everything you need to run a business from it. But, that’s a story for another blog post - and you can read more about B2B payments here.

How do I activate this fantastic Apple Pay feature?

If you already have wamo contactless, Apple Pay will be integrated as soon as you update the app. If you haven’t got the app yet (what are you waiting for?), Apple Pay will be there from the first download.

wamo contactless is completely free and we will keep it that way. If you’d like to see the smiling faces of some of the many local business owners already using wamo contactless QR - follow us on Insta. If you’d like to know more, do get in touch - we’d love to chat.
