From Small Business to Super Businesses
Walk through any city in Europe and you'll pass thousands of small businesses opening their doors every morning: a bakery in Milan, a design studio in Helsinki, a family restaurant in Valletta. Most people see small businesses. I see the backbone of our economies.
At wamo we talk about helping SMEs grow faster, but the truth runs deeper. Every payment problem solved, every hour of admin work saved, doesn't just help one business. It strengthens the economy of an entire country.
SMEs are the real economy
When we think about economic growth, our minds jump to multinational corporations. Yet across Europe, it's SMEs that quietly create prosperity.
| Country | Share of Businesses | Share of Employment | Share of Value Added |
|---|---|---|---|
| Italy | 99.9% | 74.3% | 65.4% |
| Finland | 99.8% | 63.1% | 55.2% |
| Malta | 99.8% | 74.9% | 65.6% |

Behind these numbers are millions of entrepreneurs who wake up every morning carrying responsibility: for employees, suppliers, families, communities. When SMEs stop growing, economies slow down. When they accelerate, countries accelerate.
Banking shouldn't be the hardest part of running a business
No entrepreneur starts a company because they love opening bank accounts, and no restaurant owner dreams about payment reconciliation. Their passion is building products and serving customers, yet many still lose hours every week to fragmented financial systems.
The best banking experience is one you barely notice. Money moves, invoices reconcile, expenses categorise themselves, cash flow becomes visible, and the entrepreneur focuses on growing. That's where business banking must go: into the background.
AI is the great equaliser
Artificial intelligence is usually framed as a tool for large enterprises. I believe the opposite: AI will create the biggest shift in history for small businesses. For the first time, a company with five employees will be able to operate like one with fifty.
Picture a small retailer whose AI predicts inventory before stock runs out, answers customers around the clock, forecasts cash flow months ahead, and recommends financing exactly when it's needed. That isn't science fiction: much of it already exists. What changes over the next five years is access: these capabilities will reach every entrepreneur, not just the Fortune 500.
Historically, growth meant hiring more people. Tomorrow, it will come from augmenting every employee: one accountant with the productivity of five, one marketer performing like an agency, one founder with a virtual executive team. The businesses that embrace AI earliest won't necessarily become the largest. They'll become the smartest. And intelligence compounds.
Europe's moment
Europe has millions of highly specialised SMEs: Italian manufacturers, Nordic software companies, Maltese service firms, family enterprises that are already world-class at what they do. What they often lack is enterprise-grade financial infrastructure and AI-powered tools. Closing that gap may be one of Europe's greatest economic opportunities.
Every hour saved is growth created
People ask what success looks like for wamo. More customers, more revenue, more countries: those matter. But I think about it differently. If we help a café owner save two hours a week, or a freelancer get paid instantly, we've already created value. Entrepreneurs don't need more complexity. They need more time: to innovate, to hire, to build.
The future belongs to builders
Technology has never replaced entrepreneurs; it amplifies them. AI won't replace ambition; it will multiply it. The next generation of iconic companies won't begin in skyscrapers; they'll begin in garages, small offices and kitchen tables, exactly where great businesses have always started.
Our job is simple: build financial tools that remove friction, build AI that works alongside entrepreneurs, and build infrastructure that lets every small business compete like a global enterprise.
Because when small businesses win, communities win. When communities win, economies grow. And when entrepreneurs succeed, everyone moves forward.
At wamo, we build modern financial infrastructure for Europe's entrepreneurs, combining business accounts, payments, cards, expense management and intelligent financial tools into one seamless platform. Our mission: give every SME the tools to grow with the confidence of a much larger business.
