Is wamo a bank?

By wamo

An honest answer to a question many SME owners google before landing on wamo's website.

When a business owner searches for "bank for SMEs" or "business banking services", wamo often shows up in the results. That is a good reason to answer directly: wamo is not a bank. It is a more agile alternative, built for the everyday payments of an SME. Once you understand what wamo really is and how the difference from a bank works in practice, that difference turns into an advantage.

The short answer: wamo is not a bank

wamo is an electronic money institution (EMI) supervised by the Finnish Financial Supervisory Authority (FIN-FSA). We do not hold a banking licence, and we do not offer services reserved for banks: we do not accept bank deposits and we do not grant bank loans. Instead, we offer your business a payment account, cards, payment terminals and expense management tools. They are built to be lighter and faster than what a traditional bank offers.

How a bank and an electronic money institution differ

The difference is not just wording: these are two different ways of handling a customer's money.

A bank accepts deposits and may lend them on as part of its own business: business loans, mortgages, investments. The customer's money is therefore part of the bank's balance sheet and exposed to the risks of the bank's business. That is exactly why the law requires banks to provide protection after the fact: a deposit guarantee, which compensates the customer up to a set amount if the bank becomes insolvent.

An electronic money institution like wamo works on a different principle: we may not lend our customers' funds on or use them for our own business. Instead, we must keep them separate from wamo's own funds at all times. This is called safeguarding. In practice, it means a customer's money is never exposed to the risk that a deposit guarantee exists to cover.

So wamo's protection is not a "lighter version" of the banks' deposit guarantee. They solve different problems: a bank protects the customer after the money has been put at risk through lending. wamo protects the customer by never putting the money at that risk.

Why this makes wamo a safe choice

  • The protection is structural, not optional. wamo cannot use customer funds for its own business. This is a statutory requirement supervised by FIN-FSA, not a marketing promise.
  • A Finnish supervisor. wamo holds a Finnish electronic money institution licence and is supervised directly by the Finnish Financial Supervisory Authority, not by the authority of another EU country, through which many European fintechs operate in Finland under passporting.
  • No lending risk. Because wamo does not lend customer funds on, the risk that a deposit guarantee exists to cover (a bank makes bad loans and cannot return deposits) does not apply to wamo's model in the same way.
  • Honesty about regulation is part of trust. We do not claim to be a bank or invoke protection we do not have. We tell you plainly how the protection of customer funds really works. Too many fintech companies blur this distinction. We do not.

There is one thing worth knowing precisely, though: funds in wamo accounts are not covered by the deposit guarantee scheme the way bank deposits are. The protection is strong, but it is of a different kind: it is not the same mechanism under another name.

Why a Finnish licence is an advantage, not a compromise

In the Finnish market, this difference becomes a strength. wamo's licence is Finnish, and we are supervised by the Finnish Financial Supervisory Authority, not by the supervisor of another EU country, through which many European fintechs operate in Finland under passporting. For a Finnish SME, this means a familiar supervisor, a Finnish IBAN account, and a company built on Finnish regulation from the start, not localised later.

When you also need a bank

wamo is built for a business's everyday payments, not to replace a bank entirely. If your business needs, for example, a bank loan, cash deposits at a branch or a savings account covered by a deposit guarantee, you still need a traditional bank for those. Many wamo customers use wamo and a bank side by side: the bank handles financing and savings, while wamo handles everyday payments faster and more flexibly.

Who wamo suits best

wamo is designed for SMEs that want a business account without a bank's slow opening process: cards, payments, payment terminals and expense management in one place, handled digitally. If the reason for your search was "bank for SMEs", it is worth asking what you actually need: fast, flexible payments, or bank-specific services such as loans or deposit protection. Many arrive at the same answer: both, with each provider handling what it does best.

Summary

wamo is not a bank. It is an electronic money institution supervised by FIN-FSA that always keeps customer funds separate from its own business and never exposes them to lending risk. This protection works through a different mechanism than the banks' deposit guarantee, but it is just as much a statutory requirement and just as much supervised. In Finland, this means a Finnish licence, a familiar supervisor and an account built for Finnish SMEs from the start. An honest answer is not a compromise. It is a reason to trust us.
